Purpose:
The Mills College Biochemistry Web site contains topics covered in our standard introductory courses in biochemistry (167 and 168). The materials in the site are intended to facilitate the study of biochemistry and to permit students to sense the interconnected nature of the various topics addressed in biochemistry.
Organization:
Materials contained in the site have been arranged into categories. To access materials by category, click on the blue square containing the appropriate heading.
a. supporting chemistry - a list of topics that contains review or an extension of material covered in general or organic chemistry.
b. structure and function - topics related to basic chemistry and biochemistry: molecular structures, energetics, catalysis, allostery, etc.
c. pathways - topics dealing with sequences of chemical changes that take place in living systems; from glycolysis to DNA replication.
d. methods - a listing of techniques used by biochemists in their study of molecular events.
e. general - a listing of miscellaneous topics that don't easily fit into the other categories.
f. topic (class) - a listing of all of the topics in the course, in order of their presentation.
g. history - a brief listing of the major advances in the molecular study of biological systems.
h. glossary - a listing of selected terms used by biochemists.
