    Qualifications

    ASM welcomes to full membership anyone who is interested in its objectives and has a minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent in microbiology or a related field. Currently over 34,000 full members, representing varied scientific disciplines, belong to ASM. International membership comprise 25% of the total membership. The membership fee for Full members is $49 for 2001.

    Benefits for Full ASM members include:

  • ASM News:  a monthly subscription providing information on developments in life sciences and Society Activities
  • ASM Journals:  journal rates are substantially reduced for members of ASM
  • ASM Press:  member rates on selected book titles
  • ASM Meetings:  attend meetings at member rates
  • Workshops:  member rates for workshops at national meetings
  • Public and Scientific Affairs Board:  a voice representing microbiological interests on "Capitol Hill"
  • Division:  the opportunity to join a primary and secondary scientific division representing your specific interest

    Student Membership

    Qualifications

    Any fully matriculated student majoring in microbiology or a related field who has NOT earned a doctoral degree is eligible for student membership. Student members have all the privileges of membership except the right to vote and hold office in the Society.

    Membership Fee

    The cost to student members is $15 for 2001.

    special opportunities to present research and special discounts on books

  • Education & Training:  Free information on career opportunities, college and university programs in microbiological sciences, a database of scientists for networking, and resources for educational materials .

  • Student Lounge, Student Orientation and Reception
    Enjoy the Student Lounge at ASM's General Meeting, which provides opportunities to network with other students and officers. Regularly scheduled sessions are also available with ASM volunteers and mentors to discuss microbiology and career-related topics. The Student Orientation at the General Meeting will help you navigate through the General Meeting Program and provide more information about ASM, and at the Member Reception immediately following, you can meet other students and ASM members in a relaxed, social atmosphere.
  • Educational Fellowships
    ASM offers a limited number of predoctoral fellowships in biology, biomedical science, infectious diseases, microbiology, and other health-related fields, as well as fellowships for members of underrepresented minorities. Fellowships include tuition, travel, and stipends.
     
  • Student Scientist Grants and Awards Programs

    Raymond W. Sarber Awards 
  • ASM Student Travel Grants provide funds for students who are presenting papers or posters at the ASM General Meeting or ICAAC.  The Raymond A. Sarber Awards are presented to recognize outstanding academic achievement and research accomplishments of predoctoral students and consists of cash awards to defray the costs of attending the General Meeting.

    The Student Travel Grants and a portion of the Undergraduate Research Fellowships are supported by the ASM's Corporate Partners and Corporate Sponsors.

    Transitional Membership

    Qualifications

    The transitional membership rate is available to all those who are about to graduate or have graduated 12 months prior to the application year. Transitional members are eligible for member benefits and services at member rates, except where noted. The rate for Transitional Membership is $29 for 2001. The Transitional member rate will be available to qualifying members for two years and must be used consecutively. Once a member completes two consecutive years at the transitional rate, the member will receive a full member renewal.

  • Career Placement Service  Use at no charge, including on-site interview and recruitment facilities at ASM Meetings.

2. Student Members Only:  Include the name and phone number of the Chair of your Major Department.

Cancellation Policy

Once the membership fee has been paid in any member year, no ASM member may cancel his/her membership; only journal subscriptions may be cancelled. All journal cancellation requests must be received in writing.  Verbal subscription cancellations are not acceptable.

Members will receive a pro-rated journal refund.  Cancellation  of an online journal entails denial of access to previously accessible issues.

Refunds will not be issued to US and Canadian members unless the refund amount is more than $5.  Refunds will not be issued to international members unless the refund amount is more than $20.
