ASM Membership Board and Committees The purpose of the Board is to provide services unique to the membership. Included are The various committees described below fall under the jurisdiction of the Membership Board. Archives Committee The Archives Committee is responsible for maintaining the Archives of the American Society for Microbiology and the Center for the History of Microbiology (CHOM) collections. The committee collects, preserves and displays historical material relating to the Society. The Center for the History of Microbiology is part of the ASM Archives with the mission to foster scholarly research in the history of microbiology. The Branch Organization Committee (BOC) The Branch Organization Committee recommends and administers programs on behalf of ASM Branches. The committee is charged to (1) assure orderly flow of information between ASM branches and national headquarters; (2) provide guidance and advice to the Board Chair when evaluation of the branch system is necessary; (3) sponsor workshops at the General Meeting of the Society on the significance of the functions of the branches; and (4) work with the Office of Branch Activities to provide assistance when necessary on branch-related programs and services. Committee on Divisions The ASM Committee on Divisions recommends to the Board Chair on financial and organizational policy matters pertaining to Divisions. The committee's charge is to strengthen communications among the divisions and ASM and to assist Divisions with all activities not associated with General Meeting Planning. Foundation for Microbiology Lectures Program Committee The committee administers the Foundation for Microbiology Lectures Program funded by the Foundation for Microbiology and ASM. Committee establishes procedures for selecting a panel of lecturers, reviews and makes recommendations on program policy. Annually, the chair solicits lecturer nominations from committee members. ASM publishes calls for nominations in ASM News and Branches suggest program speakers. The committee reviews nominations and selects the lecture panel for the upcoming year. Lecturers are mainly members of ASM and are distinguished lecturers and researchers. Membership Committee The mission of the ASM Membership Committee is to develop effective strategies to promote, recruit and retain Full, Student, and Transitional Members. This committee also recommends the development of programs and activities which enhance the value of ASM membership. Student Membership Committee The mission of the Student Membership Subcommittee is to provide a scientific forum for students to formulate and present their research. An additional role is to promote the value of ASM membership by informing students of relevant activities such as Sustaining Member Student Travel Grants to the ASM General Meeting, Mentoring and Networking Opportunities, ASM Branch programs, and Student Chapters. Underrepresented Members Committee The mission of the UMC is to promote full and complete participation of all of ASMs diverse members at all levels of the Societys activities with a specific focus on racial and ethnic minority members. The UMC serves as a major resource to the Society to ensure that the underrepresented groups are recognized as valuable members and are included in all aspects of the ASM. Additionally, the UMC is an advocate for increasing awareness of diversity issues and concerns within ASM and the scientific community. Career Development Committee The ASM Career Development Committee consists of volunteers from all areas of the microbiological sciences. The primary goal of the Career Development Committee is to provide low-cost recruitment services and career assistance to individuals within the microbiological sciences. The committee sponsors the Career Development Forum. |
